William J. Fassbender

William J. Fassbender is an Associate Professor of English Education at Montana State University. His research examines how technology shapes teacher identity in secondary English classrooms, using novel approaches to qualitative inquiry. Current projects explore AI's impact on literacy and composition, and the challenges English teachers face in an increasingly complex media landscape.
Background
Dr. Fassbender's scholarship sits at the intersection of digital and new literacies, poststructuralist and new materialist theory, and video ethnography as a research method. He is especially interested in how generative AI is entering — and unsettling — the everyday practice of English teaching, and in how young people and their teachers navigate an increasingly complex media landscape together.
He holds a Ph.D. in English Education from the University of Georgia (2020), an M.A.T. in Secondary English Education from UNC Wilmington (2009), and a B.A. in English Literature from UNC Wilmington (2007).
